At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will understand the history behind the use of opiates for chronic pain; how to manage new claimants not on opiates, issues to consider in old claimants already habituated to opiates; and how to recognize and manage claimants who are addicted to opiates.

This presentation will focus on the assessment of drug and alcohol impairment and resultant risk of injury. Dr. Burton will discuss the drugs he is most often asked to evaluation as “major cause” of injury, i.e. alcohol, cannabinoid, methamphetamine and opioids. He will describe how he analyzes laboratory data and corresponding behavioral factors in arriving at a conclusion
